Perceptions and Experiences of Referral to Community-based Mental Health Services among Nurses in Psychiatric Hospitals

Abstract
Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the perceptions and experiences of mental health services referral to community-based mental health services (CMHS) among nurses at mental hospitals.

Methods: Participants were 348 persons working in the mental health hospital nurses in Busan and Gyeongnam Province. Data were collected from June 2 to July 6, 2012 using self-report and analyzed using the frequency and percentage, t-test,
x2 test, Fisher¡¯s exact test by using SPSS/WIN 20.0 program.

Results: Though about ninety six percent of nurses recognized the necessity of referral, 42.8 percent of nurses have referred the patients the CMHS. The most prevalent reasons not to refer to CMHS were lack of knowledge on how to refer to CMHS (35.3%), in nurses factors no guideline on how to refer to CMHS (34.5%) in environmental factors, and rejection by clients (38.0%) in patients factors. The referral experience was significantly different by age(p=.009), current working agency (p=.022), position (p<.001), working year (p<.001), having certificate related to CMHS (p<.001), having completed training related to CMHS (p<.001).

Conclusion: Most nurses were aware of the need for referral to CMHS. Therefore, it is recommended to provide appropriate education and guideline for nurses to perform referral to CMHS.
